Hailing Island was originally known as Luodao. Later, it was called Hailing Island because of the defeat of the Southern Song hero Song Taifu and Zhang Shijie against the Yuan soldiers. According to historical records, since the Ming Dynasty, Hailing Island has been used as a coastal military fortification; after the Opium War, the British government, while renting Hong Kong Island, offered to rent Hailing Island without the permission of the Chinese government. The pioneer of the democratic revolution, Mr. Sun Yat-sen, also proposed the concept of developing Hailing as a commercial port in the "Country-building Strategy".

Regarding the origin of the place names of Hailing Island, some people say that it is because there is a tomb of Zhang Taifu on this island, which is "the tomb of the sea", so it is called Hailing Island. In fact, this is the righteousness. When Guyangjiang was still in Songkang County (around 432 AD), there was the Hailing Order (county). That is to say, more than 800 years before the tomb of Zhang Taifu, the place name "Hailing" was already available. So, how did this name come from? It turned out that Hailing Island was originally called Luodao (or Luozhou, Luozhou), because its terrain is really like a horizontal conch shell. Later, with the change of geography, Hailing gradually floated from the sea and became a veritable "hill in the sea". This is called Hailing. There is a book to prove: "Hailing was formerly known as Luozhou, also known as Luodao. The highest one is Caowang Mountain. There are rocks on the mountain, which are not man-made, and sticky oyster shells." This shows that the top of Caowang Mountain was still the sea. , Hailing gradually changed from "small conch" to "hailing".
